Derek Hei, Technical Director
Derek Hei is a seasoned expert in cell and gene therapies, serving as the Technical Director at the National Stem Cell Bank. With an extensive background that spans over three decades, Derek specializes in process and assay development, manufacturing, and quality control testing, adhering strictly to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). His career path has been punctuated by significant roles in regulatory affairs within the industry. Derek’s educational foundation is robust, holding a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Following his academic pursuits, Derek’s professional journey included pivotal roles at notable biotech firms such as Genentech and Cerus Corp, before returning to academia to lead Waisman Biomanufacturing at the University of Wisconsin. Here, he spearheaded the establishment of the first National Stem Cell Bank, aimed at setting benchmarks for the production and testing of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). This initiative facilitated the launch of groundbreaking hESC and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines into human clinical trials, marking a significant milestone in the field. His career trajectory continued to evolve as he transitioned back to the industry, taking on leadership roles that focused on advancing iPSC technologies and their application in treating complex diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease.
Susan Carlson, MBA
Susan Carlson currently serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics at the School of Medicine & Public Health, UW-Madison. With an extensive background in administrative roles, Susan has honed her skills in leadership and management, primarily focusing on the success of her team and the efficiency of operations. Her career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison includes her former role as an Associate Administrative Program Specialist, where she developed a keen insight into the nuances of educational administration. Susan also owns and manages Carlson Creative Enterprises, further showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit and versatility in professional settings.
Susan’s educational journey underscores her expertise, holding an MBA in International Business and Marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Business, and a BS in Management Information Systems from the University of Tampa. Her commitment to community service is evident through her volunteer work, including her roles as a Grant Writer and Board Member for UBETT, and Treasurer for WHOA! (We Help One Another), a nonprofit organization. These positions highlight her dedication to leveraging her administrative skills and business acumen to foster community engagement and support meaningful causes.
Dr. Tenneille Ludwig, Senior Scientist
Dr. Tenneille Ludwig is a distinguished Senior Scientist and the Director of the WiCell National Stem Cell Bank, where she is responsible for overseeing the bank’s operations, including the banking, distribution, and core services. Holding a Ph.D. in embryology and developmental biology, with a minor in bioethics from The University of Wisconsin–Madison, Dr. Ludwig has made significant early contributions to the field. Notably, she was instrumental in developing mTeSR1 during her time in James Thomson’s laboratory from 2001 to 2007, a medium that has become the most widely used for pluripotent cell culture today. Currently, her work focuses on refining standards for banking, characterization, and distribution of both research and clinically compliant materials, alongside promoting the progression of stem cell technologies into clinical trials.
In addition to her responsibilities at WiCell, Dr. Ludwig actively participates in numerous prestigious stem cell research organizations and committees. She serves on the steering committees of the ISSCR Clinical Standards Initiative, the International Stem Cell Initiative (ISCI) Genetics Study Group, and the International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI). Dr. Ludwig is also a member of the ISSCR Manufacturing, Clinical Translation, and Industry Committee and serves as the president of COREdinates. Furthermore, she represents national interests in the hSPSCreg Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Registry and contributes to her local scientific community as a member of both the UW-Madison Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center and the UW-Madison ESCRO Committee. Her advisory roles in the biotechnology and stem cell training programs at Madison College underscore her dedication to advancing stem cell education and application.
Dan Felkner, Senior Distribution Manager
Dan started his journey at WiCell in 2004 and by 2005 was managing the National Stem Cell Bank. Known for his pivotal role in WiCell’s former stem cell courses, Dan has equipped over 300 individuals with expertise in human pluripotent stem cell culture techniques. Currently serving as the Senior Distribution Manager, he is in charge of the deposit process, managing inventory, and overseeing the distribution of stem cells. His responsibilities also include coordinating lot releases and handling contract banking, while also offering technical support to researchers around the globe.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His work at WiCell is greatly enhanced by the collaborative, team-oriented environment that the small yet renowned organization fosters. Outside of his professional life, Dan cherishes the time he spends swimming with his children, enjoying precious moments away from the lab to unwind and connect with his family.
Chris Brunne – Logistic Director
Chris Brunne currently holds the position of Logistics Director at the National Stem Cell Bank, where he leverages his extensive background in logistics and marketing management. His prior experience includes roles as Director in the Greater Seattle Area, Marketing Director at VOS Healthcare LLC in the USA, and CEO of NOGAMI MEDICAL EQUIPMENTS. Chris’s expertise is centered around streamlining supply chain operations and enhancing distribution strategies within the healthcare sector, ensuring efficient and compliant handling of sensitive medical products.
Educationally, Chris is well-prepared for his leadership roles, having earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing/Marketing Management from Harvard Business School. His academic background and practical experiences combine to provide him with a deep understanding of market dynamics and operational logistics in the medical field. At the National Stem Cell Bank, Chris applies his strategic insight and managerial skills to optimize logistical frameworks, supporting the bank’s mission to advance stem cell research and therapy development.
